"AI for building websites", "neural network for website creation", "Tilda or a custom website": these are the searches of business owners who want to know whether they can do without a studio. The honest answer is: often, yes. Website builders and AI generators have come a long way, and for many tasks they are enough.

At Studio Nomad, we build websites on our own code, but we are not going to argue that everyone needs a custom website. We will walk through three paths, a website builder, an AI generator and custom development, compare them over a three-year horizon, and show the signs that it is time to bring in a studio. Features and pricing of the services are given according to their official pages as of October 2026. They change, so check the current ones before you choose.

Three paths to a website

Website builders: Tilda, Wix and the like

You assemble the website from ready-made blocks in a visual editor, and it runs on the platform's servers. You pay a subscription and do everything yourself or with a freelancer's help.

  • Tilda offers Free, Personal and Business plans. Free gives you one website with a collection of core blocks. Personal adds the full block collection and the option to connect your own domain. Business allows up to five websites and source code export.
  • Wix lets you start for free, but then your website lives at an address like username.wixsite.com and carries Wix branding. Connecting your own domain and removing the branding are available on paid plans, and their prices vary by country.

AI generators: Lovable and AI modes in website builders

You describe the website in words, and AI builds it. There are two different classes of tools here.

  • AI inside a website builder. In Tilda, you can start a website from a text prompt: AI plans the page structure, picks blocks, colors and images, and writes the copy. Wix has its own AI website builder too. The result is still a website on the platform, with all its strengths and limitations.
  • App generators. Lovable describes itself as an AI platform for building web applications. From a plain-language description, it creates a working application, including the interface, back end, database and authentication, and refines it in chat. The code can be synced with GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket. The free plan is limited by daily credits and does not let you connect your own domain; the Pro plan starts at 25 US dollars a month for 100 credits.

Chatbots that write HTML code on request are a separate case. They give you a file, and hosting, the domain, forms and edits are left to you.

A custom website

A team designs the structure around your goals, creates the design, writes the code, connects payments and accounting systems, and hands over the finished website together with the code. It takes longer and costs more at the start, but the website does exactly what your business needs.

What you can realistically do yourself

To be honest, many projects do not need a studio at the start. A website builder or an AI generator works well when:

  • you need to test demand. A landing page for a new service or product so you can run ads and see how many requests come in;
  • the website is a business card. A specialist, a small salon, an event: a few pages, contacts and a request form;
  • you need a prototype. To show a service idea to investors or your team, or to test scenarios with real users. Generators like Lovable are a good fit for this;
  • you need an internal tool. A calculator, a simple form or a table for staff, where design and load do not matter much.

To avoid disappointment, set aside time. Copy, photos, and setting up forms, analytics and the mobile version take at least as long as assembling the pages. A few practical tips:

  • register the domain in your own or your company's name, not the contractor's;
  • set up analytics right away and check where form submissions end up;
  • check the website on a phone, since many visitors will come from one;
  • proofread AI-written copy, especially the Kazakh version: machine translation is easy to spot.

Limitations to know in advance

Website builders

  • Platform dependence. If you do not renew your Tilda subscription, the website is unpublished, the data is kept for six months and then deleted. A Wix website, under the platform's rules, runs only on Wix servers.
  • Kazakhstan-specific integrations. Check in advance whether the built-in payment systems include the payment methods you need and whether the website can be connected to 1C or your CRM. We covered how to connect Kaspi to any kind of website in how to connect Kaspi Pay to your website.
  • Non-standard logic. Stock by city, different prices for retail and wholesale, a personal account with payments: anything that is not in the ready-made blocks has to be pieced together with workarounds.

AI generators

  • Every edit costs credits. The first version appears quickly, but polishing the details can take dozens of prompts.
  • The code needs review. A generated application may work in a demo but contain errors in access rights, form protection and data handling. If the website collects personal data or payments, do not launch it without a developer's review.
  • Maintenance is on you. When something breaks, AI will not take responsibility. You will need someone who understands how the code works.

A hidden cost they share: your time

A "free" website is usually paid for with the hours of the owner or an employee. If those hours are worth more than development, the savings are an illusion.

When you do need a studio

  • The website is your main sales channel and has to bring in customers from search: a structure built around search queries, speed and technical SEO are laid down at the design stage.
  • You need integrations: Kaspi and bank acquiring, 1C or MoySklad, CRM, delivery services.
  • A complex catalog or business logic. For example, in the Astra Market online store, choosing a city affects product availability, and payment methods depend on the type of buyer: individual, sole proprietor or LLP.
  • A personal account, online payments, bookings and other scenarios involving customers' personal data, which must be stored and processed in line with Kazakhstan's legal requirements.
  • Two or three language versions with proper translation and correct setup for search engines.
  • You need a contract and accountability: deadlines, a warranty, and clarity about who fixes the website and who owns the code.

Five questions to help you choose

  1. What is the website for? Testing an idea, giving customers your contacts and selling online every day are three different tasks, and the cost of getting each one wrong is different.
  2. How much time do you have? If the owner is ready to spend a few weeks learning the editor and writing copy, a website builder will save money. If not, the "free" website will stay a draft.
  3. Do you need payments and integrations? Kaspi payments with automatic order status, data exchange with 1C, sending requests to a CRM: ask about these before you commit to a platform, not after.
  4. What will the website look like in a year? If you plan a catalog of hundreds of products, a personal account or a second language, choose a path that lets you grow without starting over.
  5. Who will be responsible for the website? Someone has to take care of updates, backups, bug fixes and security: you, an employee, a freelancer or a contractor under contract.

If your answers to the first two questions are "test an idea" and "I have time", and the answer to the third is "no", start with a website builder or an AI generator. If the answer to at least the third and fourth questions is "yes", it makes sense to discuss the project with a studio right away.

Comparing costs over three years

Compare the total cost over the whole period of ownership, not the cost of the first month. Work it out for your case:

  • Website builder: 36 months of subscription, paid widgets and services, your time for building and updates, plus the cost of moving if the website can no longer keep up in a year or two.
  • AI generator: credits for the whole period, hosting and domain, hours spent on prompts and review, and a developer to fix errors and refine the code.
  • Custom website: one-time development, hosting and domain, and further development. Our warranty and technical support are free for the first 24 months, so during that period you only need a separate budget for new features, hosting and the domain.

The most expensive scenario is building a website twice: first on a website builder, then a year later ordering a new one, losing time and risking your search rankings during the move. If it is already clear that your business will need integrations and growth, it makes sense to plan the architecture for them from the start. The hybrid path: start on your own, grow with a studio

  1. Test demand. Build a landing page on a website builder or a prototype in an AI generator and see what requests come in.
  2. Record what works. The offers, copy and channels that bring in customers are a ready-made basis for a technical brief.
  3. Order a website for the business you have grown into. A studio will move the content, set up 301 redirects from the old addresses and add integrations.

AI does not go away here. We use neural networks in our projects too: for example, for Astra Market we built an AI chatbot that advises customers on the catalog and answers common questions. The difference is that a team, not a generator, is responsible for the result.

FAQ

Can I build a website with AI for free?

You can try: Tilda, Wix and Lovable all have free plans. But a business almost always needs its own domain, and on free plans you either cannot connect one or the platform branding stays. So plan for a subscription.

Can you move my website from Tilda or Wix?

Yes. On Tilda's Business plan, you can export static HTML, but for a full website with an admin panel we usually rebuild it. A Wix website cannot be moved to another host, so we transfer the content and structure. In both cases, we set up 301 redirects so that old links keep working.

Is a website builder site harder to promote in search?

Not necessarily. Tilda, for example, states that websites on its platform are indexed well. Limitations appear when you need fine-grained technical settings, a large structure, or high speed with a complex design. For a small website, copy, structure and search work matter more than the platform.
